Ohio Court Reporting Schools

The Ohio Court Reporters Association (OCRA) is actively engaged in seeking to have certification requirements for court reporters in Ohio; however, there is presently no such requirement in effect.  After completing court reporting training, a graduate may immediately begin seeking employment as a court reporter.  Despite the fact that one may begin practicing as a freelance court reporter in Ohio upon completion of court reporter training, for employment in many of the courts, passage of the National Court Reporters Association’s (NCRA) Registered Professional Reporter (RPR) examination is required.  In addition, some Ohio courts will only hire court reporters who provide realtime services.  Though certification is not required in Ohio, it is highly encouraged by the OCRA.

Many options exist for students in Ohio who wish to receive training to become a court reporter.  A number of physical campuses are available which offer day and evening classes.  For students who are unable to commute to a campus to attend classes, online programs in court reporting are offered through many educational institutions that allow a student to receive training conveniently from home.

Becoming a Court Reporter in Ohio

With Ohio having no certification requirement to begin practicing as a court reporter, a new graduate can begin seeking employment immediately.  There is a requirement that a freelance court reporter be commissioned as a notary public of Ohio, so as to administer the oath to witnesses.  The court reporter must be a resident of Ohio to obtain a notary commission, which is granted through the Ohio Notary Public Commission, a division of the Office of the Ohio Secretary of State.

The United States Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics lists the following information about the occupation of court reporting in Ohio.  Keep in mind, however, that these estimates do not include self-employed workers, which make up a significant portion of court reporters working in the state of Ohio.

Employment: 620
Hourly Mean Wage:  $23.81
Annual Mean Wage:  $49,530
