California Court Reporting Schools

The California Court Reporters Association (CCRA) has a mission to “advance the profession of verbatim shorthand reporting by promoting professional reporting excellence through education, research, and the use of state-of-the-art technology; establishing and maintaining professional standards of practice; and advocating before legislative and regulatory bodies on issues which impact the judicial system and others served by the court reporting profession of California.”  This mission is served through oversight of the Court Reporters Board of California (CRB).  The CRB is responsible for the testing, licensing, and disciplining of court reporters.  The board also is responsible for recognizing the court reporting schools that meet the curriculum standards required in California.

California has many great court reporting schools located throughout the state.  However, if commuting to a campus is not possible for you, many online options are also available that will allow you to receive your court reporter training at home.  After receiving training and becoming certified, the CCRA’s list of employment opportunities is a great place to start gathering leads to begin your court reporting career.

Becoming a Court Reporter in California

After obtaining proper training, an application for examination must be filed with the Court Reporters Board of California.  The eligibility requirements include that the applicant be over 18 years of age, possess a high school education or its equivalent, and have not committed any acts or crimes constituting grounds for denial of licensure.  An applicant for examination must also submit proof of having obtained one of the following requirements: (1) “twelve months of full-time work experience in making verbatim records of hearings, or judicial or related proceedings by means of machine shorthand writing and transcribing such records”; (2) “a verified certificate of satisfactory completion of a prescribed course of study from a California recognized court reporting school, or certification from such school evidencing equivalent proficiency, and of the ability to make a verbatim record of material dictated in accordance with regulations adopted by the board contained in Title 16 of the California Code of Regulations”; (3) “a National Court Reporters Association RPR Certificate or Certificate of Merit accompanied by a letter from NCRA stating the original issuance date of the certificate”; (4) “a passing grade on the California State Hearing Reporters Examination”; or (5) “a valid certified shorthand reporter’s certificate or license to practice shorthand reporting issued by a state other than California,” those of which are presently limited to the states of Georgia, Nevada, and Texas.

Upon meeting the eligibility requirements to sit for the certification examination, the applicant is scheduled for a testing date.  After successfully passing the certification exam and meeting the other minimum requirements, application for licensure can be made to the board.  Because the Court Reporters Board of California is within the Department of Consumer Affairs, fingerprints from all applicants for licensure is also required.

The United States Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics lists the following information about the occupation of court reporting in California.  Keep in mind, however, that these estimates do not include self-employed workers, which make up a significant portion of court reporters working in the state of California.

Employment:  1670
Hourly Mean Wage:  $38.70
